Thomas H. Shively resides in South Middleton Township near Mt. Holly Springs. Graduated from Big Spring High, he retired from Sprint (Embarq) telephone company in 2001 after 32 years, occupation Software Engineer. Tom started painting around 12 years of age with some hand-me-down oil paints from my older brother. Eventually he switched to acrylics and continue with this medium today. He was encouraged by his parents, and his high school art teacher Mrs. Virginia Wagner.
Initially interested in wildlife and landscapes, he has exhibited at the Havre De Grace Waterfowl Festival in Maryland for the last 15 years. When grandchildren came along, he began doing portraits. He now also does commissioned portraits featuring pets, children, adults and large portraits of wedding couples. His influences are John Singer Sargent and the members of the Wyeth family.
“I really love all facets of the arts such as sculpture, music, painting and theatre. Should I lose one of my senses such as sight, I would hope that I use one of the others to continue expressing myself to any who would see or listen.”
